EBRD financed trolleybuses arrive in Bishkek

The inhabitants of Bishkek will benefit from improved public transport with the final delivery of new low-floor trolleybusesto service the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Bishkek, Sept. 26, 2018. / Kabar /. The trolleybuses were unveiled today in a ceremony attended by Aziz Surakmatov, the Mayor of Bishkek, Janybek Abirov, Chair of Bishkek City Council and Neil McKain, EBRD Director, Central Asia.

The country’s largest municipality with a population of almost 1 million people will benefit from modern trolleybuses, which will help reduce CO2 emissions by up to 5,650 tonnes per year. The introduction of new trolleybuseswill also result in annual energy savings of up to 3 million kWh.

Since the beginning of cooperation between the EBRD and the municipality of Bishkekin 2011, the EBRD has provided sovereign-guaranteed loans worth €15.1 million accompanied by grants from the Bank’s Special Shareholders Fund of €8 million for public transport system improvement. They helped replace almost 80 per cent of the rolling stock in the Kyrgyz capital. 50 low-floor and 81 medium-floor trolleybuses have been delivered during the two phases of the project and now service 11 routes in Bishkek. The EBRD is also helping develop a public transport development strategy for the city.

To date, the EBRD has invested about US$ 770 million in various sectors of the Kyrgyz economy, with projects in infrastructure accounting for a third of the total investment.
